DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY DEBATES SO FAR HAVE SHOWN LESS EXPLAINING AND MORE INSULTING

The following is a link to my column that appeared in the July 9, 2019 edition of  The Tennessean and is reprinted with the permission of The Tennessean.

I don't mean to brag, but 50 years ago, I was a pretty good debater.  I was a member of the Tennessee High School State Championship team in 1969, and even a National Championship team at the University of Tennessee in 1971.  As the old cowboy on TV used to say, "No brag, just fact."

And so this old debater turned in last month for the first two rounds of the Democratic Presidential Debate Tournament.  But what I and 18 million other Americans saw was not a debate.  Not even close.

To call what transpired a "debate" would be like calling a demolition derby the Indianapolis 500.
